Friday Features - 02/21/20

Happy Friday everyone! Valentine’s Day has passed and Halifax is showing subtle hints of spring approaching! We’ve had quite a few of our fan-favourite products restocked this week, along with some colourful new additions to them! Here’s what we’ve featured on social media!

Handmade Canadian Pottery by Kelsey Watson Ceramics
The always popular sunset mugs by the Cape Breton potter, Kelsey Watson, are back in stock, and this time she brought some in a second colour! True to their name, these mugs have a dreamy gradient glaze in either pink or blue that are complemented by a stark horizon line of gold lustre. They are handmade, thus no two are identical, but consistently sized to one another - this makes them a great option if you want to pair them up for a wedding or anniversary gift, especially now with the option to mix and match with both colours available. They’re in store now but always go quickly!

Small History Nova Scotia Chapbook
The Small History NS Chapbook is a must for both locals and those living away. In 366 daily entries, it features more than 300 unique places and communities, charting the seasonal rhythms of labour and leisure, land and sea that shaped the lives of Nova Scotians more than a century ago. Follow along on Twitter (@smallhistory) to read daily news drawn directly from the pages of rural and small-town newspapers across Nova Scotia between 1880-1910. Available in-store and online.

Screen Printed Infinity Scarves by Poison Pear
Beth Ardon, of Poison Pear, continues to amaze us with her creative combo of colourful fabrics and beautiful screenprinted images. These infinity scarves could provide the perfect pop of colour to assist as you tread through the final stretch of winter. A variety of designs and colours are available in the shop!

nova scotia mayflower screenprint, Inkwell Originals
We're thrilled to reveal the latest print by our in-house line Inkwell Originals. Available now online and in-store!

The story behind the quote: Throughout the 19th century, a common unofficial motto of Nova Scotia was “We bloom amid the snow.” The phrase was a reference to the mayflower (Epigaea repens), the provincial floral emblem since 1901, but closely associated with the province long before. Mayflowers are among our earliest blooming wildflowers each spring. Their tiny fragrant pink and white blossoms and evergreen leaves peek out from the edges of the forest often before the snow has left the ground. The hardiness of this modest little flower was embraced as a symbol of the resilience of all Nova Scotians and an inspiration and reminder that beauty can thrive amid adversity.
