Friday Features - 02/21/20

Happy Friday everyone! Valentine’s Day has passed and Halifax is showing subtle hints of spring approaching! We’ve had quite a few of our fan-favourite products restocked this week, along with some colourful new additions to them! Here’s what we’ve featured on social media!

Handmade Canadian Pottery by Kelsey Watson Ceramics
The always popular sunset mugs by the Cape Breton potter, Kelsey Watson, are back in stock, and this time she brought some in a second colour! True to their name, these mugs have a dreamy gradient glaze in either pink or blue that are complemented by a stark horizon line of gold lustre. They are handmade, thus no two are identical, but consistently sized to one another - this makes them a great option if you want to pair them up for a wedding or anniversary gift, especially now with the option to mix and match with both colours available. They’re in store now but always go quickly!

Small History Nova Scotia Chapbook
The Small History NS Chapbook is a must for both locals and those living away. In 366 daily entries, it features more than 300 unique places and communities, charting the seasonal rhythms of labour and leisure, land and sea that shaped the lives of Nova Scotians more than a century ago. Beth Ardon, of Poison Pear, continues to amaze us with her creative combo of colourful fabrics and beautiful screenprinted images. Anna, of Annafolds, has restocked us with all sorts of lovely warm designs of her handmade paper lilies. They’re perfect if you want to take a low maintenance, longer-lasting approach to giving flowers. We’ve also been using them as a nice final touch when wrapping up wine!

These Love Mugs, handmade by Andrea of Union Street Pottery, playfully hide words of love, encouragement, & friendship in their cheerful illustrations. Hand painted Glass Jewelry by Azurine
All the way from Quebec, we have a selection of stunning handpainted glass earrings, rings, and pendants by the talented jewelry maker Karine of Azurine. In anticipation for valentine’s, we’ve featured a few of her heart-shaped pieces. Available in pendant & two variants of earrings (suds and dangling), these designs, along with so many more, are available in store now!

Block Printed Tea Towel by Little Brummie
A warm welcome goes out to our newest artist at Inkwell! Victoria, of Little Brummie, is a multidisciplinary artist of who has been experimenting this past year with new mediums. We’re drawn to her use of colour and shape in the block print tea towel designs we now carry. Featured here is one of our favourite designs of hers that features a beautiful tangerine themed pattern.

The ever-popular East Coaster coasters have been reprinted and restocked! Letterpress printed by hand, by our in-house line, Inkwell Originals, Our East Coasters are hand-fed one-by-one on our circa 1921 Golding Pearl Improved #11 letterpress and the ink we use is mixed with salt water drawn from the Atlantic Ocean. Happy Friday everyone! The holiday season has arrived and we’ve been busy welcoming new artists and products to the store! Here’s what we’ve featured on social media this past week!

silkscreened taco ornament by Broderpress
We couldn’t let Halifax’s first-ever taco week go by without featuring Broderpress’ fantastic silkscreened wooden ornaments! Their taco ornament took the spotlight this week; however, we have their ornaments in many other designs such as hamburgers and chickens. These ornaments are custom laser-cut from 3/16” basswood and then hand printed in vibrant colours. These incredible eye-catching ornaments are a great addition to any tree!

Handmade Porcelain Mugs by Rachel De Conde
We had the pleasure of welcoming the ceramic artist Rachel De Conde to the store this week! Rachel’s pieces are unique, beautiful, and expansive in terms of texture & aesthetic. She has developed a variety of glazes resulting in a wide range of colourful pieces completely different from one another! While we featured the mugs from her hand-drawn floral series, we also have pieces with blue tones, metallic accents and honeycomb designs!

Hand-Embroidered Art Hoops by All The Pretty Things
We also welcomed another new artist! We now carry a large selection of beautiful hand-embroidered hoop art by Emily of All The Pretty Things NS. Whether it is lettering or illustrations, Emily’s work is incredibly detailed and carefully designed. Designs made to be displayed year-long, or specifically for the holiday season, are in-store now.

Animal Swimsuit Calendar by Paper Wilderness
We had to mention Jenna Puente’s, of Paper Wilderness, heartwarming 2020 calendar of Swimsuit Animal illustrations. This calendar features 12 adorable critters modeling an assortment of swimsuit fashion. These watercolour illustrations are incredibly pleasant, family-friendly, and formatted to be framed easily after the year is over!

Laser-cut wood wreath by Paper + Light
If you’re looking for a stylish (and long-lasting!) wreath to welcome the holiday season, this fantastic laser-cut art piece (from Ali of Light + Paper) does the trick! Starting from a paper-cutting, this beautiful wreath is laser-cut from 1/8" birch wood and measures approximately 15” x 13.5”. It is a perfect addition to a door, window or feature wall!

Jodi Kostelnik of The Neighborgoods continues to make us laugh with her punny food themed tea towels. Her gourd family design is a fantastic way to welcome Autumn into your home! It also works well as an incredibly fitting gift for a Thanksgiving dinner host. All tea towels by The Neighborgoods are screen-printed by hand, machine washable, and made from 100% flour sack cotton.

This week for our Friday features we’ve really been focusing on all things new! Whether it’s a new artist being introduced or some new designs from artists we’ve carried for a while, we’ve got you covered for all sort of new adventures that tend to come with September.

To start things off we just wanted to give a quick shout out two fantastic cards we featured this week.

This heartwarming card by Ink Meets Paper is a great message to send off with someone who may be embarking on their own adventure for the first time, or just works as a lovely reminder that we could all use every once in a while.

You are my rock card by Frog & Toad Press
On a more quirky side, this googly eye rock card by Frog & Toad Press has produced quite a few chuckles here at Inkwell. While we do have it displayed in the love section, it works wonders if you’re looking for a card to thank someone for helping you move into a new apartment on the last weekend of august in Halifax.

Space Cat Mug by Tessaramics
We also have restocked our shelves with the incredible work by Tessa Reed of Tessaramics! We’ve introduced a bunch of new colours and designs of her amazing mid-fire stoneware. It's always worth mentioning that her work tends to sell quickly, so if you’re looking for a new cat themed mug if might be best to act sooner than later.

Sea Monster Pottery by Slightly Irregular
Speaking of designs new to the store, Slightly Irregular’s Chelsea Legge has expanded her wonderful sea monster collection to included planters and mugs! We are in love with her new glaze colours and the selection she has made available!

We’re so excited to welcome our newest artist, Emily Skinner of Pedaller Designs, to the shop! These typography-focused cards are so fun & Cheerful. We’ve brought in a wide selection of her birthday cards, but also some to celebrate other occasions as well!

Friday Features - 08/23/19

We’re going to start to release a weekly blog post to highlight what we’ve been featuring on our social media platforms. Hopefully, it will serve as a quick way for those who don’t always see our daily posts to still be able to see what has been catching our eye!

This week we’ve featured three local artists - Marla Benton, Andrea Crouse, and Alex MacAskill of Midnight Oil Print & Design.

We’ve been super smitten with Marla Benton’s fun & functional polka dot mugs this week. They’re a great choice if you’re looking for a new favourite mug for yourself, or their complementary colours also work well paired up as a fantastic wedding gift!

Cornwall St Halifax Paper Collage Andrea Crouse
It’s easy to see the amount of work and time that goes into each of Andrea Crouse’s paper collage designs, and her newest addition of the Cornwallis Street Row-house is no exception to this! Andrea’s work is a great way to highlight some of the memorable architecture of Halifax. It works well as a subtle souvenir of a trip to the Maritimes, or to send some nostalgia to a Haligonian who now lives elsewhere. Inkwell carries her work in 8x10” prints and 5x7” cards and a selection are available in our online store.

House Hippo Screenprint by Alex MacAskill
Alex MacAskill of Midnight Oil has returned with his Nova Scotia Map Print & his iconic house hippo print, available in-store and online. He also has brought in his new print that showcases the stunning visual history of the sneaker! All three featured prints are 16x20” in size.
