Based in Victoria, BC, the Gentle Coast is the brainchild of Sara Firby. Since she was a kid in rural Manitoba, Sara has loved creating and making art out of anything she could get her hands on: paint, paper, scissors, clay, glue, beads, wood, fabric, whatever.
When she learned to crochet as a teen, she discovered the magic of YARN! The versatility of a material that can create clothing, wall art, sculptures, jewelry - she became mildly obsessed. Sara made her first loom in 2017 from a wooden picture frame and furniture nails and began learning to weave through online tutorials and a lot of trial and error.
As a queer female artist, Sara is committed to sustainability and supporting LGBTQ+ rights. The practice of making art has always been a way for her to connect with others, to maintain her mental health, and to bring joy to others. All materials are locally or sustainably sourced, with new and upcycled yarns.
